UK BRAND REVIEW: Freedom Chocolate

Would reccomend…

I discovered the brand when I judged the confectionary category at the Free From Food Awards in the spring 2021. They won bronze for their cherry bar in Confectionery – chocolate & sweets category and silver for their dark bar in the artisan foods category.

DAIRY FREE | SOY FREE | NUT FREE | GLUTEN FREE | REFINED SUGAR FREE.

It is sustainable and made from raw cocao.

Ingredients include

(Contains coconut)

  • Raw cocao butter

  • Raw coconut sugar

  • Raw cocao powder

  • Coconut bliss

  • Extracts for flavour

Hand pick a small number of high-quality, simple, raw, ethically sourced (mostly organic) ingredients plus it is hand crafted, tempered and wrapped using packaging that is “recycled, recyclable or both and contains NO PLASTIC.”

Products

(Bold are the products I tried)

  • Mylk

  • Mylk Orange

  • Mylk Mint

  • Dark: Perfect in stregth and flavour. It doesn’t linger on the palate for that long but it is a perfect after dinner snack.

  • Dark Ginger

  • Dark Mint: The mint isn’t overpowering and the flavour of the dark chocolate is delicious. Great sub for after dinner mints or after eights.

  • Dark Lemon

  • Dark Cherry: The flavour of the dark cherry is delicious - tasted like real cherries. Would go perfectly in brownies!

  • Dark Coffee

  • Dark Orange

  • Extra Dark

  • Blonde: There isn’t much flavour to this one, but there is more of a creaminess to it - definitely not like white chocolate but if you don’t like the texture of white and the dark is too strong, I would say this is a greate sub. Would go perfectly in ‘white chocolate’ cookies or blondies.

TOP TIP

Put the chocolate in the fridge. If you don’t put it in the fridge it does crumble in your month due to the raw ingredients.

“Freedom Chocolate was born out of our family’s experience of struggling with food allergies and intolerances. So we understand how difficult it is when family members are excluded from enjoying the same delicious treats as everyone else.”

Overall thoguhts

I love that the brand is sustainale in their production, free from top allergens and the ingredients are sourced naturally and are limited. The taste is acquired if you are used to having ‘regualr’ chocolate but given all of their benefits I really love eating chemicals without any oils, preservatives and artifical flavours - plus it is a huge benefit when a brand is 100% free of my allergens.

I want to say thank you to Freedom for not only producing amazing chocolate but advocating for allergies and making your mission to change the way we eat chocolate.

”We are a small family business and we began Freedom Chocolate in Dumfries in Scotland and we are now in Cumbria in England. We love great chocolate but we also care about the people who grow it. Unfortunately, it has been well documented that the chocolate industry has massive issues with slavery and human trafficking (mostly children), in particular in West African nations. Many of the big chocolate manufacturers have their headquarters in West Africa and are aware of this loathsome practice. Since 2015, these companies have been promising to eradicate slavery in the Chocolate Industry. Nevertheless, slavery and trafficking continue on the plantations and the chocolate companies keep increasing their profits. In contrast, we work very hard to source our raw cacao ingredients from reputable, ethical suppliers. Our Cacao originates from Farmer’s Cooperatives in Peru and South America. Thus, we can help you make a conscious choice with our Ethical Chocolate.” - Freedom
